How to Pass the 6-Second Resume Test

How to Pass the 6-Second Resume TestHow to Pass the 6-Second Resume TestHow to Pass the 6-Second Resume TestMake aya your resume is catching the recruiters attention for all the right reasons. Well show you how.Studies have shown that the average recruiter scans a resume for six seconds before deciding if the applicant is a good fit for the role. In other words, to pass the resume test, your resume only has six seconds to make the right impression with a prospective employer. As a result, its important to make it as easy as possible for the reader to skim and identify your most important selling points. Consider the top third of your resume to be a snapshot in this section, include everything the reader needs to know and understand about your job goals, qualifications, and how to reach out to you if theyre interested in your candidacy.Below Ive listed a number of elements every professional should consider when crafting their resumeand telling their career story. These critical elemen ts can help you pass the six-second resume test.Your anthroponymInclude your name at the very top of your resume, as it appears on your LinkedIn profile and other job-search materials. Whether you like to go by Bob or Robert, thats your prerogative just make koranvers youre consistent. If you have a very common name, you may want to include your middle initial in your professional name to help distinguish you from the several other Sarah Johnsons in the greater New York City area.CertificationsIf you have a certification or advanced degree thats considered valuable in your career, such as an RN, MBA, or PMP, include it after your name. For instance, I tend to use Amanda Augustine, CPCC CPRW on my personal branding materials because these certifications demonstrate my expertise in career coaching and resume writing. Theres no reason to include the initials for your undergraduate degree or a certification thats not relevant to your current job goals. You may be asking why include thi s information at the top? How will this help my resume pass the resume test? Wont the recruiter read about my education in that section of my resume? Yes and no. While recruiters are on the lookout for details about your credentials in fact, its one of the top six items they focus on during their initial review they also tend to scan the resume very quickly. By leading off with the acronyms at the top of the resume, youre ensuring the recruiter doesnt accidentally overlook one of your selling points.Contact informationInclude your mobile phone number and an email address youve designated for your job search. If you havent tischset up your phone to receive voicemails or recorded a voicemail greeting, add this to your list of to-do items. When selecting your email address, I recommend creating one on a platform like Gmail that incorporates your professional name and is dedicated to job-search and networking activities. This will help you keep your job search organized and avoid and any age discrimination sentiments that often are associated with outdated emails such as a comcast.net or optonline.net.Its no longer necessary to include your full mailing address at the top of your resume. Instead, share the city, state, and zip code if youre searching for a job close to home, or remove location information entirely if youre interested in relocating for work.Supporting mediaWhile the resume tends to be a very cut-and-dry schriftart of document, there are ways to give employers a better sense of your personality, creativity, and subject-matter expertise. This is where the magic of hyperlinks begins.Below or adjacent to the contact information in your header, include links to websites that shed some light on these areas of your professional brand. For instance, its now commonplace to include the URL to your LinkedIn profile (Hint If you havent created one yet, nows the time.)If youre applying for a position that involves working with social media, you may include li nks to your personal social media accounts as well. This is also a great place to share the link to your online portfolio (for those in creative fields) or your personal blog (for writers and subject-matter experts). A word of caution, though If you intend to include a link to any of these resources, make sure youre regularly updating the information and that the content supports your professional brand and current job goals. For example, theres no need to include a link to your blog about basketball if youre applying for corporate finance positions.HeadersAll the sections I mentioned above should be included in the top portion of your resume. However, dont insert this information into the actual header portion of the da sagst du was document. This can get scrambled by the applicant tracking systems (ATS for short) and cause confusion for the recruiter. It may even cause your resume to not pass the ATS resume test. Instead, decrease your top margin on the document to 0.5 inches and place your name, contact information, and hyperlinks at the top of the page.If your resume is more than one page long, make sure your contact information is repeated at the top of the subsequent pages. You dont want the recruiter to have to hunt for your phone number or email address if theyre ready to speak with you.Professional titleWhen someone takes a look at your resume to see if you pass the test, there should be no question as to the type of role youre targeting in your job search. All too often I hear clients complain that they arent receiving the type of job leads that they want, whether theyve been individual contributors for many years and are currently seeking a management position, or they want to return to a field they worked in several years ago but only receive offers for work that correlates with their most recent experience. To help remedy this situation, and ensure your resume passes the resume test, make your job goals crystal clear, starting with the top third of your resume. Include a professional title that states your intent. For instance, you may put Senior Financial Planning Analysis Professional, Global Business Development Executive, or Entry-Level Marketing Professional, depending on your level of experience and target role. Please note that these sample titles indicate the professionals job goals without getting too specific. This makes it easier if youre applying to a few different types of roles within the same field. If your job goals are very precise, you can take it a step further and include additional information.Sample resume professional titleHeres an example of a resume professional title for a client who works in communications and specializes in a particular sector of the marketSENIOR COMMUNICATIONS PROFESSIONALHealthcare Pharmaceuticals OTC HealthTheres no doubt that this professional is looking for a communications role within the healthcare sector. Take a second look at the top of your resume and make sure theres a professional title at the top that states your job goals.Professional summaryAfter listing your professional title, in order to pass the resume test, you need to back it up with supporting information. Consider this section to be the elevator pitch of your resume. In a short paragraph (3-5 lines), answer the following questionsWhy are you qualified for this type of position? What about your experience, education, and skills make you a good candidate for this type of role? Most importantly, how have you used these qualifications to provide value to your previous employers? This paragraph is usually referred to as your resumes professional or executive summary.Core competenciesYoud assume that the person reviewing your job application must have a good understanding of your field and the position theyre helping to fill, right?Wrong. Unfortunately, the first few reviews of your resume will most likely be conducted by a piece of machinery, known as an applicant tracking system (ATS), and a junior-level sourcer or HR coordinator. To help get past these initial gatekeepers and pass the ATS resume test, its important that your resume incorporate a number of key phrases and terms that summarize your expertise. Thats where the core competencies section comes into play.Just below your professional summary, include a few columns or rows of terms that give the reader a good sense of your areas of expertise. An easy way to uncover this information is by reviewing job descriptions that interest you and taking note of the terms that routinely pop up on these job listings. You can also copy and paste a number of job descriptions into a Word Cloud generator, such as Wordle, to identify the most frequently mentioned terms.Highlighted achievementsIf youve been in the workforce for 15 or more years, you may want to include a highlighted achievements section. This segment is usually placed just below the core competencies section and above your professional history. In it, you list three to five bullets that highlight achievements you consider to be especially noteworthy and relevant to your target job. If some of your best accolades fall on the second page of your resume, this is a good way to give them special attention within your resume snapshot. The friend testWhen you glance at the top of your resume, are your job goals and qualifications obvious? If youre unsure, hand your resume over to a friend. It actually helps if this person is not in your line of work. Ask them to quickly scan your resume for no more than 30 seconds this is longer than the average recruiter takes. If they cant easily identify your job goals and qualifications, then you know it wont pass a resume test and theres still work to be done. Not sure if your resume is in shape to beat the 6-second test? Have you neglected these 2 success traits

Have you neglected these 2 success traitsHave you neglected these 2 success traitsWhen I was a little boy, I came home from school one day to discover a baby grand piano sitting in ur living room. My parents decided it would add to the decor. Also, my motherbei was interested in learning how to play. There was an elderly Latvian woman namedIrma Hincenbergswho lived in our home town. She taught classical piano. I dont know how my mother found her back then since this was before the Internet. Maybe an advertisement in the newspaper or the Yellow Pages?Mom began piano lessons with Mrs. Hincenbergs. I remember listening in bed at night, as Mom softly practiced her scales and simple, beginner exercises. Before long, I developed an interest in the piano. I started tickling the ivories and invented some of my own songs. My parents noticed this behavior and signed me up for lessons with Mrs. Hincenbergs.Every Friday, Mom drove me downtown to Mrs. Hincenbergs old, craftsmen home, where Id spend the next hour laboring over Beethovens Fur Elise and Claude Debussys Clair de lune.Weekdays after school, I was expected to practice my scales and various arrangements assigned by Mrs. Hincenbergs. Often, I resented these practice sessions, as they kept me away from important stuff like the latest Star Trek episode or Daredevil comic book. Yet, I persevered. With adolescence, I discovered the charms of jupe music and began playing the songs of Styx, Journey, and other bands. Much to my parents chagrin, little Johnny learned to sing and was soon pounding the keyboard and caterwauling to his favorite rock hits. Sometimes my poor father would retreat to the upstairs bedroom.Illustrations by John Weiss.By high school, I was in a rock band singing and playing keyboards. In college, I joined another rock band and enjoyed playing local gigs. When I first began, I didnt play the piano very well. Sometimes it was frustrating learning to play mora and mora complex songs. But I was patient and kept practicing. Over time, I improved. Those years of practice and sacrificed Friday afternoons paid off. I inherited my parents baby grand and often played and sang at house parteies. To this day, I enjoy singing and playing the piano. Clickherefor a home recording of me playing and singingEverything I Ownby Bread. Its in the air somewhereWe live in a day and age of instant gratification. Everything we seemingly want or need is a click away on our smartphones.Theres a phone app to solve all your needs, be it banking, shopping, travel or social connections. You no longer have to wait very much.Things have changed a great deal from the pre-internet age that I grew up in. Waiting was a much bigger part of life back then. There was no Uber. You waited at the bus stop. Sometimes for a long time.Food delivery was mostly relegated to pizza, unlike todays GrubHub and related tafelgeschirrs. New clothing and household items required a shopping mall or supermarket trip, as there was no Amazon .com.College research meant going to the campus library to look up periodicals and journals, which we then photocopied. Sometimes the journals were checked out by other students, and you had to wait several days or even a week until you could see it.Theres no question that I embrace todays modern conveniences, but the downside to instant gratification is that we are less schooled in the art of patience. In fact, were so used to todays technology that we freak out whenever service is interrupted. Poor wi-fi or a bad cell connection feels like a personal affront.Just move to the Internet, its great here. We get to live inside where the weather is always awesome.-John GreenTodays technology creates another negative, which is an entitlement mentality. We feel like everything should come easy. We think theres a hack for everything. A short cut to every skill set. Why learn to play the piano when you can play a YouTube video and follow along. Why practice chess against many different peop le when you can download a course and hack the best moves. The Internet is a big distraction. Its distracting, its meaningless its not real. Its in the air somewhere.-Ray BradburyThe reality is that, despite all of todays technological advances and conveniences, you still need to embrace the following two success traits if you want to achieve more in life. What are these important traits?Practice andpatienceWider and deeperlivesJust about everything truly worthwhile in my life was a product of practice and/or patience. When I first started drawing as a boy, my work was rough and amateurish. While I was blessed with some talent, my artistic development was primarily due to years of practice. All those sketchbooks filled with doodles, copies, drawings, and experimentation were investments in my creative growth. It was the accumulated years of practice that deepened my skillset and confidence as an artist. To this day, I continue a daily practice of doodling and sketching. When I first met my wife, she had come out of a difficult relationship. She wasnt interested in diving into a new relationship. I told her that it was okay, she was worth waiting for. A relationship with her would either blossom, or it wouldnt. I decided to be patient. If we want to live wider and deeper lives, not just faster ones, we have to practice patience patience with ourselves, with other people, and with the big and small circumstances of life itself. M. J.RyanIn my law enforcement career, promotions didnt come around quickly. They required years of effort, acquiring new skills, education and a positive reputation that stood out. There were sacrifices and disappointments that demanded practice and patience from me. But there were rewards, too.We dont tend to learn the value of practice and patience from the Internet. Sometimes the best things in life dont arrive instantly and effortlessly, on demand. Truly good and meaningful things often take time and effort. Not to mention patience and pr actice.Work ethic eliminates fearAmerican former professional basketball player Michael Jordan is a legend in the game. His biography on the official NBA website states By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. Wikipedia lists endless Most Valuable Player awards and other major accomplishments for Jordan. So how did he get there? What set Jordan apart from all the other professionals? Talent may have played a part, but so did practice. Listen to Jordan explain further in the following YouTube videoMost of us have some fear of trying new things or developing new skills. After all, who wants to fail or be embarrassed? We all want to look cool and instantly be great at everything. Unfortunately, you cant hack your way to greatness. Exceptional skills require patience and disciplined practice. In the above video, Michael Jordan said something simple yet profoundWork ethic eliminates fear. You have to keep showing up and practicing the skills you need to improve and become great. Also, theres a big difference between intellectual understanding and the acquisition of skills. You might be able to appreciate and understand the complexity of Michael Jordans basketball skills, but try and duplicate them yourself. Youll quickly discover that such skills require immense practice.Brains in yourmusclesPractice is an activity that you repeat regularly to develop skills, but it must be effective practice. In other words, it must achieve results.Practice puts brains in your muscles. SamSneadThe effective practice of skills gets imprinted on the brain, making your performance appear effortless to others.According to KQED.orgsMindshift podcastResearchers believe that practice helps build up the protective layer of myelin, the fatty substance that protects axons in the brain. Axons move electrical signals from the brain to our muscles and when they are better protected by thick myelin they move more efficiently, creating an information superhighwa y between the brain and muscles. The Mindshift podcast adds the following tips to get the most out of practice1. Focus when engaged in practice2. Minimizedistractions3. Start slow and increase speed later4. Practice repeatedly with frequent breaks5. Visualize the skill to help reinforce practiceSomething other than amused detachmentWhat do you get when you pair a leading interpreter of existential philosophy with a professor of philosophy and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at Harvard University? A new book titledAll Things Shining Reading the Western Classics to Find Meaning in a Secular Age.The book explores the search for meaning in our time and the threat of nihilism. It reminds us that were all searching for something more than silly cat videos on YouTube. As one reviewer of the book wroteAll Things Shiningis an ambitious little book, a prolegomenon, really, to a much larger project put simply, it argues that cowboyfilm civilization has spent its Lifemoral capital and is ba nkrupt. The ironist is our new patron saint, but all he can offer is mockery. Life requires engagement in something other than amused detachment, the authors suggest. Scoffing is our new pastime, and we are scoffing all the way to the grave. In other words, we have lost our way and waste time on superficial stuff. We spend hours on social media and YouTube nonsense. All this amused detachment keeps us away from the patient and deliberate practice of skills and abilities that can significantly improve our lives.Imagine if the time you spent distracted online was put towards physical exercise, or learning new skills? Picture whered you be in a year if you crafted a schedule of patient, regular practice of something you want to excel at?Meaning in our lives comes from doing things that matter to us, like spending time with loved ones and achieving purposeful work. Some of the happiest people Ive met are artists and craftsmen whose work fills them with purpose and joy. Their emotional liv es dont depend upon facebook inc likes but rather the excellence and growth of their creative work. They have learned the power of patience and practice in plying their craft.I wish my piano teacher, Irma Hincenbergs, was still alive. Id give her a hug and apologize for those times when I was impatient or failed to practice. Id tell her that I get it now. That most everything good in my life has come from patience and practice.Patience and practice. Dont neglect these two success traits. Your life can improve in ways you never imagined, if you learn to embrace them. You could become the next Michael Jordan, or the next Irma Hincenberg. How to Use an Employee Referral Program

How to Use an Employee Referral ProgramHow to Use an Employee Referral ProgramWould you like to tap into the power of an employee referral program? A referral program that emphasizes potential employee referrals from current employees is a method employers use to find oben liegend employees. This definition includes potential employee referrals from social media and social networking, too. Employees are keen to refer their friends and associates to their current employer if they are happy with their current employer. They want to work with people whom they like and respect. They also want to work with associates whom they believe and trust will get the job done. And they want their company to succeed. So referrals of great people by current employees contribute to their companys success and their own job security. Sharing a Positive Work Experience Additionally, if your employees love their work and respect your company as a workplace, they will want to share that positive experi ence with the people they care about the most. Why not share agood thing with friends and family members? Employees want the respect and admiration of the people that they know. They will earn more of it by thinking of them and including them in an excellent organization. Few employees are willing to put their own name and stamp of approval on an individual if they arent convinced the referred person will do a great job. Current employees also have a solid picture of the organizations culture. They know which friends will fit in with your current crowd of employees. You can ask employees for referrals for specific jobs or, generally, to develop a pool of special, talented candidates before you need to hire a person for a specific position. Social Media Contacts In this world of zugreifbarsocial mediaand social networking, an employee referral program has even broader potential to locate qualified candidates. Each person you employ probably has wide-ranging friendships on Faceboo k, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Pinterest. Your employee referral program allows you to tap into these valued contacts with everything from personal outreach to posted job ads. When an employee posts an open job on LinkedIn, their associates see the ad and inquire about more details from the employee. These are a legitimate source of employee referral candidates, too. Any interaction that the employee does to bring the referral to your door is eligible to count as an employee referral. Special Treatment for Referrals The most important factor in expecting employee referrals to continue is that you provide speedy feedback to the referring employee. Too often in organizations, employee referrals are sorted into the current pile of resumes and treated the same as resumes that came in across the transom. This is a big no-no. You need to treat employee referrals differently. They deserve special treatment, and the referring employee deserves feedback about what you have decided about hirin g the referred candidate. They are expecting feedback so that they can update the individual they referred and because they have invested their personal recommendation in this space. Let the employee who made a referral know if you dont currently have a suitable job opening for the referred candidate let them know you have placed that person in your pool of candidates for future openings. Providing that information will satisfy the employees need to know and will give them a message they can pass on to their referral. Rewards and Recognition An employee referral program solicits the referral of qualified job candidates from current employees who know your workplace culture and understand your job requirements. With or without a referral bonus or incentive, a referral program is in your best interests for recruiting superior staff. Successful employee referral programs range from programs that substantially reward employees for critical position referrals to referral programs tha t provide no incentives at all for an employee referral. Referral bonuses range from a token of appreciation to a $10,000 check for the right employee referral. Other companies rely on building a company culture that encourages employee referrals so that employees get to work with great teammates. Recognition and appreciation are demonstrated to employees who send their organization qualified employee referrals. These programs gain widespread support because the employer has effectively built in enough employee recognition to make the referrals worth an employees energy and time. Why Employee Referral Programs Fail Despite their great potential, many employee referral programs fail to attain their program goals superior employee referrals. They fail for many reasons that includeFailure to provide a reasonable incentive reward and appropriate recognition.Failure to keep referring employees informed and up-to-date on the status of their referral.Failure to publicize the referral reque sts to employees who can help recruit. And the biggest fail of all? Failing to provide a culture and a workplace into which employees want to make referrals. There are several things you can do to make an employee referral program successful, including encouraging all employees to make referrals regardless of the position they hold and providing training to employees in improving their networking skills.
